Unlike traditional power stations, solar and wind energy are not always predictable. The sun does not always shine when we need energy, and the wind does not blow on command. This unpredictability causes greater imbalance in the electricity grid. Sometimes there is too much power, sometimes too little.

To keep the grid stable, supply and demand must be perfectly balanced every second. If this is not possible, it has major consequences for us and the electricity grid.

And the good news? We can all contribute to this. Without compromising on comfort or ease of use! We do this in two ways: through rBalancing, in collaboration with grid operator Elia. And through the new eBalancing, which works in combination with compatible energy suppliers and the Flex Tariff.

From rBalancing to eBalancing: a logical evolution

Thanks to the growing demand for decentralised and dynamic solutions, it is becoming increasingly relevant to actively involve households in grid balancing. In this context, the expansion of rBalancing with eBalancing is a logical and strategic step for LIFEPOWR.

Both forms of balancing are valuable:

• eBalancing provides stability through real-time market data.
• rBalancing provides stability through pre-reserved battery capacity.

Together, they offer a powerful, complementary system that both supports the grid and delivers extra value for users, energy suppliers and grid operators. A win-win for everyone who is moving with tomorrow's energy market.

Why LIFEPOWR is now also focusing on eBalancing

With rBalancing, LIFEPOWR has long proven that individual installations, such as home batteries, can reliably contribute to grid stability. However, this approach is partly limited by the fixed nature of reserved capacity and cooperation with only one central actor: the grid operator (Elia).

eBalancing offers a more flexible approach, whereby batteries are controlled in real time based on market signals. No fixed reserve is required, which means that users can continue to use their full capacity. At the same time, they actively contribute to the grid and reap financial benefits from their flexibility.

Important note on grid balancing

FlexiO applies the same logic to every form of grid balancing: does grid balancing yield more than the local savings? Then we participate. Are your local savings worth more than the income from grid balancing? Then FlexiO does not participate.

Furthermore, any form of grid balancing can exhibit bizarre behaviour. For example, if the price for injection is negative, a power shortage can still occur on the grid, allowing your installation to inject during negative prices. Keep this in mind; it does not mean that your control system is not working properly!

The importance of cooperation with energy suppliers

To make eBalancing possible, LIFEPOWR has entered into a partnership with certain energy suppliers to jointly market Flexible Rates. These suppliers can take smarter positions on the wholesale market for the purchase and sale of energy, thereby reducing their exposure to financial risks. The collaboration between LIFEPOWR and these suppliers thus forms a powerful ecosystem:

• LIFEPOWR provides smart control and shares this with the energy supplier.
• The supplier is less exposed to risks and can offer a more favourable tariff.
• The user benefits from a more favourable tariff and can participate in eBalancing.
